Murder mystery narrative.
This story is a pick-a-path. You are the main character and you get to pick what you are going to do. When a choice comes up pick which way you want to go. Be warned. If you choose wrong you will die.
1. A cry echoes around the dark and now deadly midnight. A heavy bang sounds. You quickly hop up from your slumber but you stagger and fall inside the snowy winters mansion. You have been drugged and someone has died.
2. You are a detective named Alex Brown. You have been invited to a tour of the Southern Alps in New Zealand with your young sidekick Tom Middleton who was perfectly capable of fitting through small spaces, a young man named Ethan Alexander who would be obviously seen as a political man, a silent and shadowy man named Logan, a prissy but covered in makeup woman named Charlotte Sophia, A young but tall woman named Indie Carter and Indies strong gambling husband Joseph Carter.
Along the way the tour group’s helicopter stops at Indie and Joseph's mansion at the Ivory Lake where they would be staying the night.
“Right this way.” beckons Indie. She opens up the doors to the mansion.
“Woah!” exclaims Tom.
“Now, who would like something to eat?” Asks Joseph. Soon enough you have a plate of glorious kiwi bbq in front of you.
If you dig in go to page 3 If you pass go to page 4.
3.You dig into the glorious barbeque. “MMMMMMMMM” You murmur as you gulp a delicious chicken leg. A butler passes and gives you a fizzling can of sprite. You accept and then chug it down swiftly. Now that you have finished you start to feel queasy.
Indie then asks “ So Alex, have you had any good cases lately?” you really don’t feel like talking but you do tell them about your last case with the Fosters. Now you really feel sick. “Excuse me.” you say and then you sprint rapidly down the hall.
As you pass Ethan's room you hear him and Joseph playing something that sounds like scrabble. You slam your door open and heave an almighty puke into your toilet. It continues like that for at least five minutes. After that you feel very drowsy. As soon as your head hits the pillow, sleep looms before you. Go to page 5.
4. You pass on the food and then proceed to the lounge. It is a quiet room with a large couch and an armchair. You sit down and turn the tv on. Hours pass and you slowly drift to sleep. Somebody hands you a hot chocolate. As you sip it you slowly fall asleep and the cup crashes to the ground.
Go to page 5.
5. A cry echoes around the dark and now deadly midnight. A heavy Bang sounds. You quickly hop up from your slumber but you stagger and fall inside the snowy winters mansion. You try again and again until you finally muster the strength to get up. Tom appears at your side and checks your pulse. “Are you alright? I heard a cry and I thought it could’ve been you.” He says.
“ I’m alright.” you reply.
“Let’s go check it out then.” says Tom.
Tom runs into Ethan's room and you follow. There you see the cold lifeless body of Ethan Alexander. Panic wells inside of you.
If you run away go to page 6. If you stay go to page 7.
6. You run out of the mansion. Snow whips at your face and tears your clothes. You have run straight into a blizzard without any equipment. It doesn’t take long for you to trip and fall without getting up. Your now empty body lies in the snow to be found by some hikers.
Go back to the start.
7. Indie and Joseph run into the room followed by Logan and Charlotte. “What happened here?” says Joseph. Logan looks like he has seen a ghost and Charlotte has started to scream. Ethan's body is sprawled across a scrabble table with an obvious bullet hole through his head. He is wearing a Potato Peelers shirt. There is a pounamu manaia drooping from his neck. The gun is nowhere to be seen but there are countless scrabble tiles on the ground. You check Ethan's pulse and know for sure that he is dead. Logan slips out of the room. Luckily your detective instincts kick in and you ward everyone back. Tom blocks the door off with police tape and then he turns around. “Who did this Alex?” He asks.
“I don’t know,” is your reply. Tom offers to check the body. You have two choices. If you question everyone go to page 8. If you look around the house go to page 10.
8. You walk out of the room and into the kitchen where everyone sits in shock. You ask for Logan but he runs off with something behind his back. Suspicious. Indie is first. “Where were you when the murder occurred?”
Indie replies with “Me and Charlotte were having a bit of wine and enjoying a music quiz when Joseph ran past. He asked if we had heard the gunshot. Me and Charlotte ran to Ethan's room where you and Tom were.”
“Alright….” you say.
Charlotte walks up and gives you her alibi. She was with Indie.
Next up is Joseph. He says that he was on the couch to go to sleep. He has started to fidget so you know he is lying so you push him to the truth. “Alright alright! I was playing scrabble with Ethan and then I went to the toilet and heard the gunshot.” “Thanks for telling the truth Joseph” you say and then Joseph leaves.
9. You pull up Logan and he is sniffling. “What are you crying about?” you rudely snap.
“It’s just…....”
“Just what?” You slowly ask.
“Just…. *sniff* Do you know my last name Alex?”
“No….” You reply.
“Well, well, It’s Alexander Alex, I’m Ethan's brother.”
“I….. I’m sorry.” You reply.
“I’ll just go off and ring my parents, they must know.” Logan says as he runs off.
“Everyone just go around and wait. We must take caution. The helicopter will be here tomorrow and we can’t afford to lose anyone.” You say strongly. Gradually everyone moves out of the kitchen. It is time for you to look around.
CLUE. Logan is Ethan's brother and was hiding in the shadows because he was mourning.
If you look in the lounge, go to page 11. If you look in the murder area go to page 12.
10. You walk out and into the entrance hall. It is time for you to check the rooms. Logan peers around the corner and then runs off after seeing you. You run after him and catch up. He turns a corner and runs into a hallway. When you follow there is only two open doors. One leads to the lounge and one leads to the room where Ethan was murdered. Choose wisely.
If you look in the lounge, go to page 11. ` If you look In the murder area, go to page 12.
11. You walk into the lounge and see Joseph sitting on the couch but there is something under the couch. You bend over and pick up a voting slip. It has communist party written all over it. It also has Josephs name on it. The winners of the election were announced last night with the Communist party coming close and just losing to the Potato Peelers by 123 votes. Wasn’t Ethan wearing a Potato Peelers shirt when he died? You talk to Joseph and he seems uneasy telling you that he doesn’t know anything and that he didn’t know who won the election. He then changes the subject and says that he doesn’t know where Indie is.
CLUE. Indie has gone and she is always with Joseph. Also Joseph was rooting for the Communist party and Ethan was not. Is that enough to drive Joseph to kill?
If you go to the murder area, go to page 12. If you go to the kitchen go to page 16.
12. You walk into the room where Ethan died. Tom has taken pictures of the body and you check everything for fingerprints. There are no fingerprints on anything. You look around again and see a gun hidden under a disturbed floorboard. Tom sees it and picks it up in his gloves. He drops it in the bag and checks the fingerprints. It doesn’t match any fingerprints that are recorded but you swear you’ve seen those fingerprints before. A flash catches your eye at the same time as you see something on the scrabble board.
13. You pick up what caused the flash and see that it’s gambling money. Joseph likes gambling. The evidence is becoming so much clearer. So then why do you recognise the fingerprints? You check the board that Ethan was playing on. The tiles are made of ivory. There is a bit saying midd and the letters L and e are scattered on the board as well. Otherwise everything looks like an average scrabble game.

14. You walk into the murder area. Again you see the midd.

15. You look on a map and find that the middle of the map is Joseph's man cave. As you make your way there, Tom tags along. You strongly argue that it’s too dangerous and that he should stay back. He starts to yell at you until you go down an elevator without him. The elevator drops gradually until it comes to a stop and you appear inside Joseph's man cave. It’s a small garage with a broken motorbike in the middle. The garage is lit up with blue neon lights and has a pool table and a beer fridge. None of those are what you’re looking for but the plasma tv catches your eye. It has the tmo logo on a loop. As the logo spins around and around a thought hits you in the back of the head, literally. You turn and see Joseph standing there with a tennis ball in his hand. “Sorry about that, I thought you were that peeping tom Logan.” And suddenly it all becomes clear. The tmo, the peeping tom and especially the murder. All you needed to do was rearrange the letters. “Exactly.” You exclaim.
“What?” says Joseph.
“Gather everyone in the lounge. I found the killer.” You say as you sprint to the elevator.

16. You walk towards the kitchen as the sound of people talking gets louder. You walk towards the doorway and halt. You realize that it’s Charlotte and Indie. You then forget why you came there when you see a pistol tucked in Indies dress. You then decide to act calm and not startle them.
If you eavesdrop on them go to page 17. If you talk to them go to page 18.
17. You listen in on the conversation. Its so quiet you can’t hear who is talking. “He hasn’t talked to you since you broke up has he?”
“No he hasn’t Indie, No he hasn’t.”
“How did it happen?”
“He said that his brother was going on a tour of the southern alps and that he was taking us.” “How did that lead to yo-”
“It was because I hate his brother. We had an argument and he broke up with me.”
“Well that’s not too bad.”
“You don’t understand Indie. He threw a ring at me and yelled ‘this would have been yours Charlotte.’” You risk a look around and see tears streaming down Charlotte’s face.
“Don’t worry Charlotte, I’ve got you.” Indie whispers.
Go to page 14.
18. You walk in and start to ask Charlotte and Indie questions. “What are you talking about?” You ask. “Nothing.” Indie and Charlotte reply in unison.
“Why did you sneak away from Joseph?” you query.
“Well a girl has gotta have girl time doesn’t she.”
“Well in case you didn’t notice, the killer is on the loose!” You accidentally yell.
“Don’t come any closer Alex. You have no right to be peeping.” Yells Charlotte.
If you back away go to page 14.
If you demand to know go to page 19.
19.
You start yelling at Charlotte. “Tell me what you were talking about!”
“NO!”
“Why are you so secretive, I’m a detective!” You yell.
“It’s because what we talk about doesn’t concern you!” Charlotte yells as she throws a glass at you. “That's it!” you roar as you lunge across the room and grab Charlotte threateningly.
“Stop it Alex or I will have to shoot you.” Says Indie calmly. She is holding the pistol you saw earlier. “Listen Indie.” you stammer as you let go of Charlotte. Tom is now lurking in the doorway. He reaches in his pocket and jumps to stop Indie. As he grabs the gun a shot fires from a different gun. You don’t see where the bullet came from because it’s already passing through your body. A loud thud echoes around as your dead body hits the floor. You have died and the murderer is still loose. Go to the start.
20. You gather everybody in the lounge. You’re practically jumping with excitement.
“Okay everybody I know who the killer is. Indie was gone when I talked to Joseph, but she was with Charlotte. Joseph was rooting for the Communist party and Ethan was not. At first all of the evidence pointed to Joseph. I got drugged on the first day and Joseph could have arranged that. The thing is that once I saw Tom picking up the gun and checking the fingerprints. I knew I saw those fingerprints. Then Tom wanted to come down to the man cave, which was where the evidence became clear. You see, Ethan knew he was going to be murdered and he knew who. He knew if he told us he would seem like a nutter. That's why he put the midd on the table. That midd was the key. But he knew that we would mistake it for the middle of the house so he put another clue. The tv wasn’t the clue, The letters were. TMO.”

If you accuse Charlotte, go to page 25.
21. “That's why I accuse Indie!” You exclaim.
“I didn’t do it Alex.” She replies.
“The evidence points towards you. You persuaded Joseph to kill Ethan.”
“Your a nutter Alex.” Says Tom. As soon as that the helicopter pulls up. An argument breaks out when the police pull up. Tom was right though. There was no evidence against Indie. No one can figure out who was the killer and everyone gets off free. Except you. You lose your job and end up getting killed in a car accident.

22. “That's why I accuse Joseph!” You exclaim.
“I thought you knew it wasn’t me.” He replies.
“The evidence points towards you. You killed Ethan.”
“I agree.” Says Tom. As soon as the helicopter pulls up and Joseph was arrested. Indie was heartbroken and you and Tom are rewarded. In your next case you get shot from behind. As you are dying you realize that you arrested the wrong person. Go to the start.
23. “That's why I accuse Logan!” You exclaim. “Why would I kill my own Brother!” He replies. “The evidence points towards you. You wanted to inherit something but Ethan was going to inherit it.”
“Your a nutter Alex.” Says Joseph as the helicopter pulls up. Logan is crying and he attacks you. In the end he gets arrested for manslaughter and you are in a grave.

24. “That’s why Tom is the murderer.”
“What!” he yells. “I’m your apprentice.”
“Exactly the point Tom. You were jealous of me getting the credit weren’t you? You slipped the drug in my drink. Then you waited till Joseph had left the room when you killed Ethan. You knew Joseph would come quick so you hid the gun and came running to me. That made it look like you hadn’t been around Ethan. You faked the voting paper to frame Joseph. Those fingerprints on the gun were yours Tom. You weren’t taking care of the body. You were getting rid of any signs that you killed him. Then the TMO on the tv. Rearrange the letters and you get Tom.”
You finally finish your accusation. “Take him away.” You tell the cops that arrived shortly after you started your accusation. Go to page 26.
25. “That's why I accuse Charlotte!” You exclaim.
“I didn’t do it Alex.” She replies.
“The evidence points towards you. You were annoyed that Logan broke up with you so you decided to kill Ethan.”
“Did you Charlotte?” asks Logan.
“Of course not Logan.” They start to hug until Tom breaks them up.
“OK we know you didn’t do it Charlotte.”
“But then who did?” you mumble. You spend the rest of your year trying to crack the case. Finally you crack it. But no one believes you. You lose your job and are forced to spend the rest of your life living in a slum.

26. You walk out of the mansion with Tom in handcuffs. As you are wondering where to go a police officer beckons for you to follow him. You walk up some steps to the top of the mansion where a helicopter is descending. You squint to see who’s inside the helicopter and you get a surprise. “Hello Alex. It’s me James!”
“James?” you ask quizzically. The helicopter touches down and James jumps out. Well, he actually fell out. “I’m alright Alex.” says James.
“It’s great to see you brother.” you say as you run forward and hug him.
“How was the case Alex?” James asks as you both walk off.
“It was…….” you start as James falls in the snow.
“I’m alright!” yells James. You run down and help James up. There is another helicopter just over the ridge. It should take 3 minutes to walk over there. But with James it will take an hour.

27. Epilogue.
Ring ring ring. It’s James Brown. “Hi Alex. How’s it going as chief of detectives?” “Good. It’s quite hard but it’s my dream job.” You say as you swivel from your desk on your chair. “Hang on James I’ve got someone here.” you say as you put down the phone. “Hello.” you say to the man in front of you. “Alex I presume?” He asks. You nod your head and he says “We have a case for you Alex. There have been rumors of a serial killer in Auckland. You can pick any other detective to go with you.” “James.” you say into the phone. “Pack your bags. We’re going to Auckland.”`
